Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at a lovely museum in historic Elm Springs Tennessee. This was my very first photo shoot working with professional models. I was so nervous and didn't want to mess anything up. Being a self taught photographer this was a very big learning lesson as well.

Time

This is photo was fun to do because I had always wanted to try and it and my model was all to happy to pose for it. This was indoors in early morning about 9 am. Outside was rainy and cold but that didn't stop the shoot. But the house that we where in

Lighting

With the lighting I made sure that she was facing the window that was behind the mirror and I captured the nature light coming in and then the room light was just a fill light for the back. Doing it this way gave her a natural lighting all through her face. It whited out the window so that the focus point stayed on the mirror and my model.

Equipment

Just a Canon 70D . My lighting was supplied just by the natural light from the windows or the normal light fixture.

Inspiration

Since I was very new to the photography world I was looking for anything that wouldn't be a typical photo. My model funny enough was trying to fix her hair and makeup in the mirror so I started shooting. The result was great, so I told her to go ahead and pose for me and the picture you see is the result. It really came down to the fact the my model had that pin up feel and the bright red lips just made the shot so much better.

Editing

In this I honestly didn't do any major editing other than alittle cropping so that I could center the mirror and model better so they became the main focus. Again with being a new retoucher as well. No very experienced in this department and like being self taught on the photography side. Teaching myself on the editing side I try to keep any editing to just adjusting the light and sometimes zapping blemishes or blotches out but in turn keeping it as close as nature as I can.

In my camera bag

Now for equipment , that is a work in progress. Right now I have my canon 70d with the standard lens that comes on it. A simple inexpensive speed light , few stands, soft-box umbrella that is reflexive inside, a soft-box light and lastly a inexpensive studio set. My plans are to upgrade to a new canon looking to get the 5d mark III, a 85mm lens to get that wonderful 1.8 aperture . Also going to get a portable flash so I can more mobile and have different lighting options.

Feedback

My advice is this for anyone trying to capture the same. Get into a place that can give a strong light on to the models face but keeping it natural enough. Also to make sure that the background is lite well so that when you take the shot you can see depth in the mirror but keeping the model as the main focus. Besides that be creative. The sky is the limit. I am all about painting a picture with what I take and trying to capture a story in most of my work. Whatever you do, its your story to tell.
