Behind The Lens

Location

This Photograph was taken in Kariba, Zimbabwe, while I was on my Christmas Vacation with my family from Zimbabwe. We stayed on a houseboat on Lake Kariba and elephants would walk by the boat when it was parked on the shoreline.

Time

This was taken some time in the morning hours after full sunrise.

Lighting

wanted this image to really show off the elephants skin texture and veins behind his ears. This is exactly why I used the morning light to really brighten up the elephant, who would otherwise look quite dusty and flat in skin tone.

Equipment

I used my Nikon with my Nikkor 70-300mm lens

Inspiration

I am passionate about the well being of our wildlife in Africa, poaching is such a devastating problem and has put many animals, especially Elephants on the endangered species list. Kariba in itself has seen a massive decline in wildlife sightings in the past 10 years, which in turn hurts tourism and the economy. I wanted to photograph as many animals as I could while on vacation to show the beauty of seeing real wildlife in its natural habitat, to prove just how much work we need to do to keep them around for future generations.

Editing

I put the image through photoshop and adjusted the levels, I then added a black and white adjustment layer.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon DSLR with its 18-35mm lens and then usually I'll bring another two lenses that are more appropriate to the situation/location. Like a zoom lens or a 50mm.

Feedback

Always be vigilant in any situation pertaining to wildlife, respect the area/land/environment. Be ready for anything to move out of the bushes and into view so that you can snap the perfect shot at a moments notice. Also early morning light is the best light.
