Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Old Portsmouth looking over towards the Gunwharf area

Time

I love taking photos in the Blue Hour just before dawn, then shooting through the Golden Hour. This image was taken just on the cusp of the Golden hour after the Blue had past which accounts for the beautiful colours in the sky.

Lighting

As with a lot of other images in my portfolio, This is a long exposure photograph. The exposure was around 13 minutes if memory serves correctly as I wanted perfectly flat water and any moving boats to not be present at all.

Equipment

Canon 5d mk2, 24-105 f/4 L lens, Manfrotto BeFree tripod, 10 stop NISI nd filter, Nisi polarizing filter. Generic remote shutter release.

Inspiration

I just wanted to take a lovely photo of an iconic local landmark.

Editing

Just lens correction and basic Raw processing in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

Depends on the shoot! when this was taken it would have been a canon 5dmk2 with the 24-105mm f/4 L lens. Nowadays it'll more than likely be an olympus omd-em10 mk2 with the 14-42 kit lens.

Feedback

Practice, practice, practice! Set your alarm clock nice and early and dress for the elements. Composition is paramount for a shot like this.
