Beautiful but it also gives me a sence of sadness with a feeling of loss.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at City Methodist Church in Gary, Indiana during a day trip for a college class about revitalizing cities. We visited several abandoned buildings that day but there was something special about this church.

Time

The image was taken mid to late afternoon in early autumn.

Lighting

The lighting is what drew me to capturing this photo. The natural light coming in through the stained glass was what initially drew me in but then the additional sunlight coming in at an angle through the damaged ceiling added to the interest and appeal.

Equipment

I used my Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS point-and-shoot. At the time I was just starting to get involved with photography. While I had a DSLR and was learning how to use it properly, I was still more comfortable with using a point-and-shoot under a time crunch.

Inspiration

I have always felt that abandoned buildings have a beauty to them that often gets overlooked. I wanted to capture that beauty through this photograph. I feel like each time you look at the photo there is something new to be discovered from the detail of the stained glass to the reflection of the same glass in the puddle on the floor.

Editing

There was minor post processing done to this photograph with exposure.

In my camera bag

In my bag I usually have my Nikon D3000 body, 18-55mm AF-S DX Nikkor lens, which until recently was my go-to lens for its ease of use and size, 55-200mm AF-S DX Nikkor lens, 35mm AF-S DX Nikkor f1.8G lens, and most recently and my new go-to lens the 18-300mm Nikkor lens. I have been enjoying the 18-300mm lens and the diversity it allows when taking photographs.

Feedback

My advice for others trying to capture something similar is to trust your instinct if you think the photograph could be something special, be patient when trying to capture it, and try to encompass the feeling you get in the space within the photograph. An abandoned space was once full of life, while it is no longer that way try to capture the beauty of how it exists now.
