Behind The Lens

Location

The Cape Disappointment Lighthouse was taken in Ilwaco, Washington. One of my many stops when I am in the area is Cape Disappointment State Park. You never know with the weather what you will see...serene calmness or tumultuous waves. One thing for sure it is always breathtaking.

Time

I was just leaving a meeting and thought I would drive down and see what was going on. So it was taken around 3:30 pm.

Lighting

The stormy weather was just starting to break, which left some great clouds yet color from the sun starting to show through. Since our weather along the coast can change rather quickly, when in the area I always stop by to see what the lighting is looking like or just to reflect on the power of the ocean.

Equipment

At the time I was using a Canon EOS 50D, lens EFS18-200mm, ISO 320, and no other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I have always been drawn to the sea and lighthouses (along with barns). The mysteries that surrounds them have always made me seek them out. Living here in the Pacific Northwest I have the opportunity to visit our two lighthouses here in Pacific County often. Our weather can change in a heartbeat and whether is it clear, raining, stormy or foggy the beauty abounds around the cliffs and the lighthouses perched high on the cliffs. You never get the same picture twice.

Editing

Because of the mist in the air and the clouds, I was kinda liking the muted tones. I thought I would do a little HDR processing and see what the effect might be. So I played around with the SOOC photo by enhancing the contrast and clarity. Did a little with the colors to keep it in the same tones. I achieved the look by using both Lightroom and Photoshop.

In my camera bag

Sometimes I just carry my Canon EOS 7D Mark II with my trusty EFS18-200mm lens. It's just my go to set-up. But if I am on a day shoot I pack my tripod, EFS 18-55mm lens, shutter release, a couple of filters - ND and a circular polarizing.

Feedback

You should always stop even though you might not think the conditions are perfect...because sometimes its better than if you had planned it! You may never be that way again. As they say "take a chance!" Because if you are doing what you love, you will get that shot!
