Location
I took the photo in my own home-studio. In other words; I moved my couch to the other side of my living room and created some space to shoot. On one side I have a white wall and on the other a blue one. I use both walls as backgrounds for my portrait shots.Time
The shoot was timed somewhere between 6pm and 10pm. Since I use flash for my portraits the ambient light doesn't really matter to me and therefor I'm not limited to day time.Lighting
The subject is lit from one side with a big 120cm softbox. It's a fairly cheap godox softbox but I get great results with it. In the softbox I used a godox speedlight to lighten my subject. The light was placed in front of the subject on the left side of the camera aiming down 45 degrees. I didn't need other lights because I knew I wanted to create a moody picture and accentuate it even more with post processing.Equipment
The shot was taken hand held with my Sony a7II. I'm really happy about this camera and it's all I need for my style of shooting. The lens I used is a Sony Zeiss 55mm f1.8. It's a really sharp lens and I can recommend to anyone who likes to count pores on people's faces ;-) The speedlight I used is a Godox tt685s which supports TTL and HSS for my Sony. I put it in the godox 120cm octobox. The lighting gear I use is pretty cheap but really capable. I have three of those speedlights, a x1t transmitter and a few godox soft boxes and umbrellas. Using HSS is so easy with this kit. You only have to choose a fast shutter speed on your camera and the gear does it's magic.Inspiration
I find a lot of inspiration in other photographers on sites like viewbug or for example Instagram. I'm a real sucker for moody portraits and love the work of Sean Archer. He might be the reason I tried this shot.Editing
I love doing the post processing on my images. I find it really relaxing to do after a hard day of work. I have an Adobe photographers subscription and use Photoshop and Lightroom to finish the look on all my images. I'm the kind of photographer who likes to manipulate the mood in the final image but keep the people as natural as I can. I don't like the kind of processing that a lot of photographers use and that makes people's faces look like plastic. My favorite skin retouching technique is frequency separation. And I only apply it as little as I can.In my camera bag
I carry around way to much gear. Mostly 3 lenses a tripod, a mini-tripod, 3 camera batteries, 3 ND filters and a filter holder, a Triggertrap cable and dongle, cleaning clothes, lens hoods and my phone with a remote trigger and some apps to track the sun, moon and stars.Feedback
It's really not that difficult. You need soft light (big light source and set it up very close to the model). The rest is done with post processing. Turn the exposure down to darken the background and turn the exposure up to light your subject correctly and use masks to exclude the bachground. After that your base is set and you need to boost the contrast a little bit with the levels and apply some color grading. Mostly I add a little bit of green, turn down the reds and add a little blue or yellow. That's all :)
