Mono Lake, located just outside of the northeast gate to Yosemite National Park, is a very unique place. The tufas, for which the park are named, are a moonscape-like upward outcropping of limestone created when freshwater springs containing calcium bubble up into the alkaline salt water. The calcium combines with the salt water’s carbonates creating the eerie spires reminiscent of a stalagmite in a cave.
