Back in the 2009, a holiday trip to Scotland.
Here the Eilean Donan Castle, or, as some funny local person told me, the Castle of Italians
He said that the major part of italians knows two things about Scotland: this castle and Loch Ness.
Was a really nice sunset, on the loch, heavy clouds but nice colors, unforgettable.

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Dornie, a small fishing village in the Kintail district in western Ross-shire Highlands of Scotland.

Time

This image was taken in evening, after a 5 hours driving from the north of Scotland, around 10 or 11 p.m.

Lighting

It was dark because it was a not-so-rare cloudy evening, but the castle was very well illuminated. A little ray of color comes through the clouds. It was time for a long exposure, amplified by the use of a 3-stop GND filter. The water in the Loch was quiet, so I knew that the only movement would have been in the sky. I was hoping in some little colors in the clouds, and so it was

Equipment

The equipment: my old (but a lot beloved) Canon EOS 350D, with a Tokina 11-16mm on a not-so-sturdy tripod. A 3-stop GND filter was used in that occasion

Inspiration

I was there, in that spot, exactly to shot an image like that with the castle and the Loch. I studied the spot for weeks before the holidays and the trip in Scotland. I was so lucky to be there with the right light, the right cloudy sky, the right conditions...just that in that case: a 100% matter of luck.

Editing

The image was taken in 2009. I post-processed this one that year, but my knowledge about RAW files and Lightroom was very poor. So, this year, I decided to start from the scratch and re-edit some of my past photos that they remained in my heart. This is one of that. Post-processing involved: white balance, exposure and contrast, and little help from photoshop to balance exposure from the sky and the other part of the image.

In my camera bag

Since this photo I changed 2 times my bag, and its content. Now I have Mirrorless Micro Four Third camera, Olympus om-d e-m10 mkii with a M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 14?42mm 1:3.5?5.6 II R and a Samyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS. The part of my bag that I'm most proud of? My filter system: NiSi Holder V5 + NiSi circular polarizer + NiSi 10-stop ND filter, 4-stop ND filter, a bunch of Formatt-Hitech GND filters form 1-stop to 4-stop reduction.

Feedback

This is a very busy spot. In the day, in the evening, in the night also. You can picture at the sunrise. Never give up. There is always a way to take a good picture, even if you don't like the light, it seems that conditions are adverse to you. This is what I learned. I was frustrated for the heavy cloud in the sky, I wal calling me a unlucky guy. But I said to me: 'try it' Never give up.
