I love food and food was the focus for my final folios for my Commercial Major Diploma, it was shot on my north facing balcony at home.Time
This was one of my favourite images from my food folio, it was challenging due to the elements on the day, taken around midday there was plenty of harsh light and it was really windy I remember being covered in chocolate!Lighting
Because of the midday sun I ended up placing a white garden umbrella over the shooting area and subject to diffuse the light, which gave it a really nice glow but I lost the nice highlights in the chocolate which resulted in it looking dull, so I positioned a silver reflector and white bounce board until I was happy with the catch lights on certain areas bringing back the glossy shine.Equipment
Equipment used for this image was my Canon 7D, 18-135mm lens @ 50mm 1/180 sec at F8 iso.100, Tripod and silver reflectorInspiration
This series where all diptych, each image had a complementing image to go along side it. In this case the chocolate supported the image of a chocolate cake. I tried various chocolate shots - stacked, broken up, chocolate powder but it wasn't giving me the result I was after so I decided to melt it and play with it dripping and this was the end result which was my favourite for the day!Editing
In post I boosted whites/highlights, played with saturation until the chocolate had that 'I want to eat it appeal' I also used blur and clone tool at a reduced opacity on the table area as it had lines that I wasn't happy with and to assist with the subject standing out.In my camera bag
After I graduated I invested in the Canon 5D 111, 24-105mm which is my go to lens and body these days but I also love my 50mm and 70-200mm. I shoot a lot of natural light so my reflector is always on hand. My focus has been newborns of late so my other favourite investment is the 'baby shusher' miracle tool for settling those tiny humans on the day!Feedback
Don't be afraid to try different things from lighting, props and ideas. I have found that sometimes you can get too attached to an idea and it just doesn't pay off or work, play and have fun with it and you will come away with an image you weren't expecting and happy with.
