Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on my mum's property in Denmark Western Australia.

Time

It was late afternoon and cloudy day, very even soft light

Lighting

due to the cloud coverage on this day it was acting light a giant soft box, all the colours and shadows where very soft. I remember how even the kids skin tones looked whilst the textures in surroundings and mud where really sharp and contrasted, giving me the inspiration for exaggerating this in post process to enhance it even more.

Equipment

7D, 18-135mm lens, no other equipment was used

Inspiration

I was just enjoying seeing the kids 'being kids' no electronics, no city noise and the joy they where having getting mucky and exploring their environment.

Editing

Photoshop was used in post and I wanted to exaggerate the textures and muted tones I remembered when photo was taken, so played around with desaturation, applying B&W layers, opacity and sharpness until I achieved the look I wanted.

In my camera bag

My go to equipment at the moment is my 5D 111, 50mm prime and 24-105mm lens.

Feedback

I just took inspiration from the moment and had an idea in my head, I'm no PS expert and wanted to experiment with layers and textures to create an image that was more illustrative and was in line with what I remember from the time I shot the image. Don't be afraid of experimenting and trying new things as sometimes the result can be surprising and satisfying.
