I took this photo on my birthday in my small apartment in Northern Italy. My boyfriend had decided to make me pancakes for breakfast.Time
I am not an early bird, so It was halfway through the morning before I could get out of bed. But It was my birthday after all, so no hard feelings for sleeping in a little longer.Lighting
My apartment has lots of windows. The pancakes where on the kitchen table with two big windows to the left. I liked the light that was coming in because it was not yet as harsh than the midday sun. It was a cloudy day.Equipment
I used my Nikon D5100 and my wide-angle lense. This was just the first thing I had in hand. I was really impatient to taste the fresh pancakes, it was my better halfs first attempt in cooking for me.Inspiration
Food is really important to me. I love to eat it, smell it, look at it, and now that I started in photography, I like to take pictures of it. My boyfriend had to poor honey over it, because it gave the shot some action, and it looks so much more Yummier! Some sugar and berries on the table to make it look not so clean and that was it.Editing
The background was not so clean, there were some bents in my paper, fixed that, and I brought out the little strip of honey coming down somewhat. Other than that just a little saturation and clarity. In my camera bag
For me photography is about seeing little things, so I always carry around all my stuff, because I never know what I might see today that I especially like. So there is my Nikon D5100, a 18-200 zoom, then my 105 Nikkor macro lens for all the really small stuff and a wideangle lens that I got for my birthday for Landscapes and some nice abstract ones. lastly I just bought a fixed 50mm 1.8 lens that I am still trying out, but am enjoying greatly so far. I dont like to use flash, so I dont own any of those, but I use a simple tripod for longer exposers.Feedback
Just try it. Food photography now has its own name, and I am spending a lot of time on looking at other food photos. I like the ones with berries and shallow dof, and specially the ones that dont have this clean and proper look. Thats what I would suggest. throw in some accessories, like berries or a colorful spoon or napkin to lighten up the picture. And specially enjoy the food, that makes it easier to convey some of its flavour and taste.
