Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Crescent City, California along the costal trail.

Time

This is one of my most memorable pictures I took. It was taken in mid June during the early afternoon. The conditions seemed perfect where it was slightly overcast with clouds and just the right amount of sunlight was coming out. Perfect weather for a hike with my camera.

Lighting

I am extremely new to photography and am still learning myself. While I do a lot of research and trail and error myself, I do ask a lot of photography friends about the best times to take outdoor photos and most of them said that an overcast cloudy day is the best as there is not much harsh sunlight to white out the image. It just happened to be an overcast day when this photo was taken. I did not use my flash instead I used what natural light was available.

Equipment

This image was taken on the Nikon D3300 with the 18-55 mm lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I was on vacation visiting family and we love to go hiking. There was one trail in particular in Crescent City, California that we wanted to take because it lead right up to the coast where it was a little me secluded from families due to the hiking distance. It was like a scene from a movie where my family and I are hiking along with the kids running ahead. Trees are surrounding us with no sign of the coastal water. Up ahead you could see where there was a very abrupt opening when the woods ended and the trail to the water began. This is the view I walked out to and it took my breath away. I knew I needed to capture this moment as it was too magnificent.

Editing

As I am new to photography, the editing portion is also new to me. I did not edit too much of the photo. I played around with the basics, brightness, contrast, shadow and highlights until I felt the image was well balanced.

In my camera bag

For a new photographer I only have my starter with me. I carry my Nikon D3300 with the 18-55 mm lens. I have my extra battery just in case charged and ready along with lens wipes to clean off the camera lens especially when the wind is going.

Feedback

My advice to anyone who enjoys photography, whether you are new or a pro at it, always have your camera on you. Opportunities never stop coming and having your camera with you may just allow you to get that once in a lifetime shot. Also, have fun when taking pictures. Try new angles, viewpoints and subject matter. You can learn so much from books and videos but the real experience comes from trial and error.
