Behind The Lens

Location

My apartment in New York City.

Time

April 28, 2012 at 7:44 am. We had recently renovated the living room when, I glanced to see the morning sun sliding across a newly painted, silver radiator. I took several photos but kept only two; this is one of my all-time favorites. It captures how I see and what I want to say with photography.

Lighting

Photography is about light primarily, and secondarily about form and composition. All of that comes together for me in this photo. Sort of like magic.

Equipment

iPhone 4. Eyeball.

Inspiration

Light and shadow. Machine-made forms. Quality of the moment.

Editing

No.

In my camera bag

Nearing 70, after a career in design and education, I wanted to learn more about photography through discipline, dedication and doing. After having photographed for about 6 years with point-and-shoots and iPhones, I bought a camera and lenses, one by one, through eBay—all used but in excellent condition. (It’s possible.) I now carry a Panasonic GX7; two Lumix lenses: 3.5–5.6/14–45mm and a 1.7/25mm, filters and eyeglasses, media cards, dust cloths etc. And, course, my iPhone (now a 6).

Feedback

First, you have to look: keep your eyes open and never lose the moment. Two, always keep a camera at hand, even if it is just a phone. Three, shoot for the camera and for your own amusement.
