Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at my home. I used keyboard but tried to make it look as piano as much as possible.

Time

It was late afternoon, 6 pm. After whole day waiting for my sister to help me with photo which should show human hands, she decided to resign so I had little time to figure out something new with only one (my) hand and had like 3 hours because it was part of the challenge.

Lighting

Lighting is pretty simple because it's only window light but with roller blind half down to make it look more dark and mysterious and make the glow on my hand look different. I decide to set up my camera on low ISO and quite high shutter speed to go a little darker.

Equipment

I used my old but appreciated Sony Alpha 200 camera with its kit lens. Nothing more, I took this photo with one hand on piano which wasn't that easy because unfortunately I have no view on screen while taking the photos.

Inspiration

It was the part of Adam Elmakias' "be a photographer" challenge. Which is 10 day Challenge and require one photo per day with topic for every single day. It was 4th day and the topic was "human hands". I wanted to do something with piano from the start but something more original. I had totally different idea but I needed helping hands and my sister in last minute decided to not help me, so I sat and was thought "I'm not gonna make it". First I took my eyeshadow to make my hand glowy but after one shot I realised that it was lacking orginalty, so I decided to add something to it and I had nothing special, so I went to kitchen and started playing with some food and used potato scratch to make glowing substance, colored it and suddenly the whole formula changed. I was forced to work with what I'very got, so I made it work. I really like this photo for some reason and later on I made metaphor out of this. To keep it short I captioned it this way "Even the greatest artist fails sometimes".

Editing

I kept it really simple. I used some clarity, contrast, a little touch up on saturation (after clarity colors can become really dull). Some little adjustments on shadows and whites maybe but really small.

In my camera bag

I always take my Sony Alpha 200 with two lenses, kit lens 18-70 and minolta lens 100-300. Unfortunately my equipment isn't professionall because even I always wanted I never had a chance to gear up better, maybe someday.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to play with light. Challenge yourself to use what you encounter. Imagine that you have only your camera and lenses and nothing more. Make advantage of your limits and try to think in abstract ways. Don't be afraid to think outside the box and try a lot of things. I took this photo without planning. I just looked at 3-4 things and thought how can I use every of them separately and then connect it all together. Experimenting is the key because it helps you grow. Don't try to copy others work or make it similar, just experiment and it will come naturally. Don't try too hard and have fun. Just try every possibility. For example only window light, then with some lamps and choose what looks the best.
