Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Wolcott Park, West Hartford, CT, on a pit stop on our way home from a family vacation in Rhode Island. The huge bounce house to which we had planned on going was closed, and we thought this playground would be a rather sad alternative, but it wound up having a great little mini-water park that was great fun and offered my son a chance to cool off on a very hot summer's day.

Time

Noon! Usually a time when photographers run for cover, but as a stay-at-home mom, I find that it's the time of day that I most frequently photograph (can't usually take advantage of soft morning/evening light when I'm trying to get my son ready for preschool or bedtime!).

Lighting

I often convert my photos to black and white, not only because I like the look, but also because I think it helps mask the effects of bright noontime light.

Equipment

My iPhone! (6s).

Inspiration

My son has been not only the inspiration for this photo and many others, but the catalyst for my taking my photography more seriously. He absolutely loves water, and running through fountains and sprinklers is his favorite activity. I love the challenge of capturing the instant of pure bliss on his face when he runs through a stream of water, and in this instance, I knew that the unusual and rather dramatic-looking snake and flower fountains, along with the shadows below them, would make for a great noir photograph if I only waited for the right moment.

Editing

I just converted the original to "noir" on my iPhone.

In my camera bag

Until I can afford a good camera, I work exclusively with an iPhone, along with an Olloclip Macro Pro lens kit that I recently bought for taking macro shots.

Feedback

I find that with toddlers the key is to just keep shooting until you get a good shot. It can take lots of patience!
