Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at The Kingwood center in Mansfield, Ohio, The Kingwood center is surrounded by a large beautiful garden, that has a large variety of plant life. In the center of the garden in a old historic mansion that used to be owned by Mr.Charles Kelly King who opened up his land and garden to the public back in the 50's for all to enjoy.

Time

This was taken on a warm, sunny Sunday afternoon, summer had just begun so it was not quite hot yet. With my family and friends we walk around the garden and came upon a Lilly pond with tadpoles swimming around the bottom of the pond. I was surprised how well this photo came out as I was dodging cicadas as they flew past my head.

Lighting

I relied on the natural lighting from the sun to grab the color of the lily and the lily pads just right. I did not want to take away from its natural beauty or it vibrant colors.

Equipment

This shot was taken with my Kodak Easy Share z710, being just an amateur and having very little money to spend on equipment, I have been very lucky to take such great shots like this one with my Easy Share camera.

Inspiration

There was so many beautiful plant life in the garden but it was the vibrant colors and different shapes and size that would catch my eye. I found the color of this lily to be absolutely breath taken, it not every day I came upon a pink water lily from where I live. What you normally find here in our streams and ponds are the white water lilies. Its nice to have such a wonderful place to go to see different and wonderful plants that you would not normally see in everyday life.

Editing

There was no post processing on this image, I found it to be exactly how I wanted it. The colors, the shadows, the lighting all how I wanted it to be. I try not to process my photo if I can photograph the natural beauty right then. Yes it make taken more then one shot to achieve that goal but I don't mind it gives me the opportunity to practice angles and lighting and learn from my mistakes and accomplishments.

In my camera bag

My Kodak Easy Share is the only thing I grab on my way out the door, it has been a trusty companion for the past 3 years. I have currently started saving up for other equipment such as a another camera, tripod and lens. As much as I love my kodak I would to have the ability to do more and go further with my photography.

Feedback

Look at the details of the plant, is wilting, does it have holes in it? I tend to photograph plants that have that look strong and healthy, that is not eaten up by insects and animals. When you find that healthy looking plants it make for and excellent photo. Watch your lighting as well to much light can wash it out, changing the color of the plants and taking away from it natural beauty. Shadows do the same, if there is too much shadow that makes you image dark it changes the color and composition of the photo. I find for me photography is all about the right moment, the right timing, not every image will come out the way you hope it will, so take as many as possible until you feel you got the shot you was looking for. Practice, timing, lighting, and keep clicking that button, this is my advice. Good luck to all you photographers out there on getting that one great shot !
