Behind The Lens

Location

I take the train to Boston for work, and pick up a commuter bike at the train station and ride to my office. One of my routes is along the harbor. This shot was taken near Rowes Wharf and the Seaport just before I turned inland toward my destination.

Time

I took this shot about 6:15 a.m., just after sunrise. There were dark storm clouds overhead, but the sun just barely lit up the horizon.

Lighting

The clouds were dark and dramatic, but just starting to lighten with the dawn. The sunrise at the horizon created interesting shadows and reflections in the water and I liked the juxtaposition of the sailboat masts on the left reaching into the sky with the silhouette of the pylons in the water on the right.

Equipment

I used a handheld Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS50, which has a Leica lens.

Inspiration

The light, clouds, sailboats, and pylons immediately drew me in to stop my bike and take the shot.

Editing

This was a raw file. I adjusted the contrast and the black and gamma levels before "developing."

In my camera bag

I almost always carry my Panasonic. It's a pocket camera with a really nice lens, so I can take it anywhere and still get good shots.

Feedback

My best shots come at sunrise and sunset around rivers and ocean. The quality of the light and reflections on the water make for some magical images. Always having a camera at hand has allowed me to get shots that only lasted for a few moments and that I couldn't have prepared for.otherwise.
