Behind The Lens

Location

During 2016 I challenged myself to take and post one image a day for the whole year. On the day I took this shot I was going to visit the Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth to Grab some images, but realised I didn't have my wallet, so couldn't afford the admission. However, walking around the outside of the dockyard I spotted HMS Warrior, and took this shot, which was enhanced by the dramatic clouds.

Time

This was mid-morning on an overcast day.

Lighting

With heavy cloud cover, the light wasn't great, but the saturation was really good, so I was able to expose and edit for the rich colours.

Equipment

As with many of my shots last year I took this with an iPhone 6S. My normal kit at the time was a Nikon, but I couldn't carry it around all the time, so often fell back on the excellent quality of the iPhone.

Inspiration

Part of a one year challenge to take, edit and post one image a day, this was the best I took on that particular day.

Editing

I deleted a few modern artefacts in Snapseed, tweaked the tonal balance a little to enhance the clouds, sharpened and warmed up the whole image.

In my camera bag

Nowadays I use a Fuji X Pro2 And an XT1, with a range of Fujinon lenses. My favourite is the 55-200, and I love the 56 f1.2 for studio and setup shots. I also use my 10-28 extensively....and I still carry my iPhone 6S of course!

Feedback

Seeing things as potential photographs becomes a habit, and setting yourself a challenge to shoot something every day without exception will make that easier. You'll stop taking things for granted and start to look at everything for its potential as a photograph instead. Open your eyes to everything and you will see great photographs all around you.
