Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken outside the Ohana Walt Disney World Resort. I loved the way the large coy pond looked with the waterfall and just knew it would make a great shot

Time

This shot was taken in the morning. We went to the Ohana resort to have breakfast before going out to the Magic Kingdom and on our way out while waiting for the rest of the group I just had to capture this image.

Lighting

The lighting is all naturally lit. The time of day, the covering of the trees and the angle of the sun were just perfect for this shot

Equipment

I used only my Canon classic 5D camera with my 24-105 1:4 L lens hand held with my Bower dHD Polarizer Filter

Inspiration

I love waterfalls and this pond was absolutely amazing and the lighting conditions were perfect. I just couldn’t pass up capturing it.

Editing

In post processing, I increased the saturation of the water a bit. I lightened the foreground foliage as well as adding a bit of saturation and darkened the background foliage to give the shot a little more depth.

In my camera bag

In my bag at the time of the shoot was my Canon Classic 5D (now 5D mark IV) with my Canon 24-105 1:4 L attached being that it is a great all around lens and my go to for most of my shots. Also in my bag is my Canon 70-200 1:2.8 L lens, my Joby Rapid Strap, my My Canon 640Ex speedlight, a My Canon speedlight battery pack, my Gary Fong collapsible Light Sphere along with the clear and Amber domes my Bower dHD polarizer filter 4 Yongnuo YN-622C Transceivers, my Apple iPad Pro with Apple Pencil and charger, my Canon Camera battery charger, My AA battery charger, a couple of tripod disconnects, 3-4 sets of AA batteries to power everything (Aprox 44 AA batteries) and 3 Camera batteries. I also pack my lens cloth. In my backup bag that usually gets left in the car at a shoot is my Classic 5D, the battery charger for it a couple Camera batteries, two 580ex speed lights, an LED variable brightness and white balance light panel for continuous lighting if desired and I always bring along a tripod and my Custom Brackets QRS-E2 Rotating Bracket.

Feedback

My advice for trying to capture something similar is take several shots and play with your settings, needle matching your first shot then purposely ranging from slightly dark to slightly over exposed. Also work in the changing of shutter speeds to find the perfect amount of motion blur in the running water and desired depth of field for your desired effect also try different angles if possible to get the desired lighting effect from the natural light also remember post production work can turn a so so image into a beautiful work of art so if you don’t get it perfect in the field don’t disregard that image. I have made many beautiful images from stuff that I almost deleted in the camera.
