Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Eisenhower Park at a gathering with friends for the Independance day fireworks display.

Time

I'm not really sure what time it was, however it was a little before the fireworks display started. Probably a half hour to 45 minutes after the sun had set when there was just a little glimmer of light still left in the sky.

Lighting

I was really worried that I had lost any available light that I had. I was using my Canon 24-105 L f4 lens. I opened the lens all the way to f4 and my shutter speed was set around 1/30. I set my ISO to around 800. I had my 580ex to light my foreground and my Gary Fong Collapsable Lightsphere with the Amber dome attached in the collapsed position pointing at my subject. This gave me nice warm lighting to complement the little bit of warm light still left in the sky. I took my two shots. This being one of them. The next shot I took after that, any available light I had was completely gone.

Equipment

This Image was taken with my Canon 5D around my neck, Canon 24-105L f4 lens, Canon 580ex, Gary Fong Light Sphere with Amber Dome.

Inspiration

I love taking canned photos of children at play. You get the best photos of them that way. Stopping them at what ever they are doing briefly to look at the camera. They are already smiling naturally or they have an expression on there face that is their personality. Not a posed forced "cheese' smile. The kids were running around and playing. Along comes my daughter and starts running in my direction to run past me. I lifted my camera up and told her to stop and look here. This is one of the images that resulted from it.

Editing

I adjusted the color, saturation and contrast a a bit in Lightroom as well as adding texture and a little more warmth to the background of my image in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I carry a Canon 5D, my Canon 24-105 L f4, a Canon 75-300, two Canon 580ex's, a Canon 600ex, Gary Fong Whale Tail, Gary Fong Light Sphere, my Joby Pro Sling Strap

Feedback

Just go out there and experiment. Set you needle match in the camera to the exposure you want for your available light and depth of field. Set your speedlight to act as a fill flash not the source of your lighting. Use a warming filter on your flash for a warmer more natural lighting on your subject. Play with the image using different textures and filters to see what enhances the look of your image.
