It was hot and humid in Singapore the past few weeks and finally, on this day, it rained. I saw this puddle of water after the heavy downpour and shot it with the Singapore skyline's reflection at a very low angle.

I achieved this shot by laying my camera on the puddle, putting it at risk. Fortunately, water didn't enter my camera and to this day, it's still working. :)

Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this image at the Marina Bay in Singapore, which I consider as my favourite night and cityscape photography playground in the world. It is one of the most visited and photographed tourist spots in the city-state for it boasts some of the most beautifully designed buildings on earth. I go to the area at least once a week and try to capture something different everytime I visit.

Time

It was the blue hour when I captured this scene, which in my opinion is the best time to photograph the city's skyline. This is when its skyscrapers glow radiantly after sundown, against the blue hues of twilight.

Lighting

It was quite a challenge shooting this photo because of the super bright spotlight that was directly pointing towards my direction. If I were to shoot directly to the light, this image would've had lots of lens flare and a bright spot that could have ruined the whole image. To solve this, I waited for one of the spectators to eclipse the spotlight and at the right moment, I pressed the shutter. Thus, i was able to capture this scene with a proper exposure.

Equipment

To create this image, I used a Canon 60D with a Canon 10-22mm wide angle lens attached to it. I did not use a tripod since I rested my camera on the floor to capture this photo.

Inspiration

Since this area has been shot a gazillion times by other photographers, it is always a challenge to create a new image of the place. As a photographer, I always want to be different and find a new perspective. So when I noticed this puddle after a rainy afternoon, I saw it as an opportunity to capture a unique angle of Marina Bay. This is what I came up with. And ever since I posted this shot on my social media platforms, it has been re-created numerous times, and I find it as a complement to the original work that I have done.

Editing

For all the images that I create, I usually do very minimal post-processing because I always want to stay true to the scene that I saw during that moment. For this photo, I did a bit of saturation to boost its colors and resized it for web posting. That's about it!

In my camera bag

As a landscape and urban nightscape photographer, aside from my Canon EOS 5D Mark III, my most essential equipment is my Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens. It is best for capturing those scenic landscapes and wide-angle photos of cityscapes. I also have the Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens in my bag just in case I need to zoom in on some landscape scenes. For long exposure landscapes, I have my Hoya 77mm NDx400 HMC Filter, Hoya 77mm NDX8 Filter and B+W 77mm Kaesemann Circular Polarizer Slim MRC Filter, all of which I use for different landscape scenes. I also have my LEE Graduated Neutral Density Filters to balance the exposure of my landscape photos.

Feedback

It takes a lot of guts to soak part of your camera in the water to get this image. This shot was unplanned and I had to take a risk to get this shot, but in the end, it all paid off and my camera was still functioning. However, if I were to do this again, I would make sure that my camera is well protected from the water to avoid damaging it.
