Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Spring Park in Tuscumbia, AL - the birth place of Helen Keller. My family and I were attending the Helen Keller Festival there and I was inspired to take a photo of this beautiful waterfall.

Time

I took this photo around 3:30pm. Actually this was a "spur of the moment" shot, my family and I were waiting around to pick up an order from one of the local vendors at the festival and I began looking at this beautiful waterfall and the rest is history! I didn't have my tripod, so I used an outdoor electrical box to steady the camera due to the slow shutter speed that I was using to blur the motion of the water.

Lighting

I was concerned about the harsh light at the time of day that the photo was taken, but it ended up creating some very nice shadows that I feel add to interest to the photo.

Equipment

This photo was taken with a Nikon 3200, Sigma 18-250mm 3.5-6.3 lens. ISO 100, 250mm, f/22, 1/13 sec.

Inspiration

I had admired this beautiful waterfall for the last couple of years that my family had attended the festival. I had also been wanting to experiment using different shutter speeds to blur the movement of water. Voila! The perfect combination!

Editing

I processed this photo using Lightroom. Cropping, color and tone correction, sharpening, and then I finished it by using one of my favorite clean and crisp presets.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D3200 body. I keep my Sigma 18-250mm 3.5-6.3 lens because it is so versatile and I can use it any number of situations that I find myself in. I also always have my Nikkor 50mm 1.8 lens because it is my absolute favorite lens for portraits, which I love to take also. It gives me a wonderful bokeh and gives my subject beautiful, sharp eyes.

Feedback

For this photo I used several different shutter speeds before finally settling on 1/13 sec. I would advise experimenting until you find which shutter speed right for you. Also if you find yourself shooting impromptu, like I was, you can always try out different ISO's to get your exposure correct while maintaining the shutter speed that you desire. And remember, if you find yourself without needed equipment (such as a tripod) - IMPROVISE!!
