Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while walking with my wife in a local nature preserve. Wasn't a great day for photos, but I brought my equipment anyway.

Time

Photo was taken in early afternoon on a warm early summer day.

Lighting

Lighting was very muted due to overcast skies and high humidity. Walking along paths in and out of the forest allowed for some contrast and shadow, but you had to be creative.

Equipment

Photo was shot with Canon 6D w/ 24-105 f/4 USM L . Using macro features of this lens allowed for exceptional detail with distinct Bokeh and depth

Inspiration

Most of of the wildflowers were well past peak and summer drought in full swing. The only color that was visible other than the green of the foliage was these orange beetles and blue damselflies.

Editing

Pulling the image off the camera via the Canon 6Ds Wifi hotspot connection was simple process with my iPad Air2. Using the free version of Photoshop Express I played around with various setups but wasn't really thrilled with the lighting. I tried the Carmine setting that allows the user to punch out everything except the beetles colorful exoskeleton. The remaining greens were rendered in high contrast black & white giving the image an otherworldly alien feel.

In my camera bag

Sadly I only have the Canon 6D and the Canon 24-105 f/4 USM L lens, but maybe Santa will see that I was good this year .

Feedback

Never be afraid to experiment. Even a poorly lit, flat contrast image can be brought to life if you think differently. Go to B&W or even invert the image to negative to try and make something out of nothing.
