Photo taken while vacationing at Massanutten Resort in Virginia. Mommy deer and 2 fawns chilling in the shade having a snack by the side of the road. These deer are very accustomed to humans and I could get as little as 10 feet away.Time
These resort deer hang out all day near the road. People tend to feed them (bad humans????). This was mid-morning while returning from craft making activities at the resort. It's almost as if this deer is talking to the viewer! Massanutten is a photographers dream. Blue Ridge mountains, Shenandoah valley overlooks, Many natural limestone caverns, Civil war historical sites, winery & lavender farms.Lighting
Mid morning sun filtered in dapples and streaks through the hardwood canopy. Enough humidity was in the air to soften the light and prevent harsh glares.Equipment
Canon 6D w/ Canon 24-105 USM II L F/4 lens Tiffen circular polorizing filter.Inspiration
Adorable mother deer and 2 fawns eating and playing in a quiet resort forest. Little traffic and easy access to subjects.Editing
Only adjusted contrast and saturation with free Photoshop Express on my iPad Air 2. Cropped to adjust subject's eyes to optimal ROT grid intersectionIn my camera bag
Just the Canon 6D 24-105 F/4 for now.Feedback
Pick quiet times of the day with wildlife. Deer are active at dawn and dusk... Usually. They are usually chewing their cud in the shade all day to stay out of the daytime heat. Shoot at lower angles w/ small children of all members of the animal kingdom. A smaller human profile, crouched, is less intimidating, allowing you to get closer without spooking the subjects.
