Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on a small side street in Paphos, Cyprus. I saw the scene and I knew I have to capture it.

Time

Being my favorite photo so far, I remember exactly when I took it. It was the middle of June, hot and dusty. Around 11:30 am I left the house and went in search of things to photograph. After 20 minutes I took this shot. Who said you can't take good shots in the middle of the day?

Lighting

I love reflections. As a matter of fact, this was one of my firsts attempts in photographing them. The way the light creates images and stories is unbelievable. The fact that I was well hidden from the harsh daylight, but at the same time helped by it was a plus. I wanted to tell a story about mystery, future and reflections. And I couldn't have done it without the help of light.

Equipment

It was a few days after I received my Sony alpha 6000 as a present and I was experimenting as much as I could with it. This shot was taken with the kit lens 16-50 mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Alpha E-mount, handheld.

Inspiration

When I first saw this poster with the lady wearing glasses, I knew I had to use it in the composition of a photograph. As I saw through the windows an old lady approaching I knew that was the shot. A way of seeing through the future, a way of reflecting over life and its fragility. One moment you are bold and beautiful, next you are old and fragile. This is the story behind this photo.

Editing

Street photography doesn't need too much processing, because the photograph needs to tell a story, not to be overly processed. Sometimes I might need cropping, working on light and some special effects to draw the viewer more into the story, but I wouldn't recommend it on every shot. It's better to work on composition. For this photograph I didn't do any post-processing, because I had enough time to compose the shot. I took 3 shots of the scene and this was the winner.

In my camera bag

I've learned to carry my camera everywhere I go. Since I use two cameras, it depends on how much I can carry. When I travel I take both my Canon 700D with 50mm f/1.8 and Sony alpha 6000 with 55-200 f/4-5.6, to have both zoom and quality. An a daily basis I like carrying around my Sony a6000 with 16-50 mm just because it's lighter and fits in my work bag. But no matter what, I always have a camera with me.

Feedback

I've just started learning and experimenting with photography this year so there is pretty much to learn everyday. So far I've learned that composition is the key to great images. I am fascinated with reflection and I try to show that in my photography whenever possible. However I don't think we should limit ourselves to one style. My advice for people like me, who are new in the photography field is to never give up no matter how awful, under or over exposed their photos are. Not everyday you'll take a good photo. There will be days, weeks or even months when no great shot will be produced, but that doesn't mean you won't get lucky or that you won't improve your skills in time. Continue on your road, learn more, read more and experiment more. Photography is about that perfect moment when everything makes sense, when a story begins in your viewfinder and it's created in your camera just by clicking a button. Start creating your own stories, with your own, unique vision.
