This is shot in an abandoned power plant. Something about the gorgeous metal spiral staircase withering away really strikes home, and helps us all to see what has been, what is, and what could be! Every part of this room is just this gorgeous rust color, and you see no lingering of any other colors.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken inside of an abandoned power plant in upstate NY. I love to adventure and explore the history of the amazing abandoned buildings around me. I love seeing what was once, what is, and what might be.

Time

This image was captured around 6PM, sun was soon setting, and the light was coming in the windows to the right.

Lighting

I used mostly natural light to capture this image, with a slowed shutter speed. (1/4")

Equipment

Nikon D5300, 8MM Altura Fisheye, Tripod.

Inspiration

This spiral staircase captured my eye and my heart the moment i saw it. To the left on the bottom, you can left you can see the stairwell. That is when i first saw the staircase, above me, from the corner of my eye. I actually climbed up that stairwell, even though it was missing stairs, a landing, and a railing (perhaps not my brightest move, considering i discovered an easier way). I would have done anything to get a better look and shot of this spiral staircase.

Editing

I turned up the shadows, and applied adjustments in lightroom to achieve the rusty tone.

In my camera bag

I currently run a very light set up of equipment. I always have my D5300, 8MM fisheye, and my 18-55 kit lens. I also LOVE my 35MM Nikkor and my mefoto tripod :)

Feedback

In the art of "urbex" its all about having a GOOD tripod and knowing how your long exposure function works! You don't even need the best glass to make the best image, and that is the beauty of it! A good eye is the best part of it all! Don't be afraid to break the "rules" of photography. (You should know the rules to break them though!) And take your time and photograph everything. Look for light. Sometimes the best natural light helps create the most elegant images, even in the midst of despair.
