Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Germany, where me and my husband currently live. To get more into details, i took this picture in front of the entrance to Hohe Höll mountain in Bavaria, the south of Germany.

Time

The picture was taken around 9-10 A M. A second after leaving our car I noticed a field and thought that it would be wonderful to have a house in the mountains with the similar view. Because my husband had to go back to the city for a second, I had a while to enjoy and dream about Bavarian idyll with the cows hiding behind the trees from the sun.

Lighting

One time I stumbled upon the information that the most beautiful pictures are taken after the rain, with the sun coming out from behind the clouds. I must admit that it's true what you can see on one of my photos with the Bavarian church. Moreover, Elena Shumilova taught me that 2pm is a perfect hour when it comes to lighting. The picture shows that a beautiful lighting is also achievable during morning hours. To be clear, it was not yet full light shining straight on the target. Also, during going through my notes from the workshops I attended, I reminded myself that the best light is provided by the sun at the angle of 45 degrees - another challenge waiting for me since I need to be in a correct place at the correct time in order to take the picture of my dreams.

Equipment

I use the camera Canon EOS 5D Mark II which is going to stay with me for a long time for sure and I am still learning how to use it more effectively. My favourite lens for the landscapes is lens 24-105 Canon, supposedly not the best one in basic terms but personally, for me this lens is extremely reliable and sharp as a razor. Also, I use a polarising filter made by B+W company.

Inspiration

I love magical, fairy tale landscapes which already exist and I do not need to create them in Photoshop. This exact place is my magical scenery, where I feel that the world is beautiful and l am blessed with an opportunity to experience it.

Editing

I am rather reluctant to do this; usually I try to avoid Photoshop. However, sometimes small corrections are necessary. In this picture, as my master of lighting Elena Shumilova advised me, I darkened some of the dark elements with a brush and some of them I brightened. The correction was slight but added a lot of value to the picture.

In my camera bag

In my bag I always have 2 spare batteries, a cleaning kit for the lens and a second lens which is 85 mm.

Feedback

To be honest, I do not really know what kind of advice I could give to others since I am still learning. I just follow the feeling in my heart, my instinct and the image in my head – I do not know how to express it… I think that sometimes it is enough to just to stop for a while in a special for us place, somewhere where we feel good, take a look around and just take a picture of something that we would like to show to others, share the emotions embedded in the picture and encourage them to visit that place.
