Location
I visited Portland, Oregon, for the first time during my schools fall break middle of October 2015. During my 4 day trip, I drove out to the coast line to do my own personal "Goonies tour". I started the day on the North West corner of Oregon in the town of Astoria. I rented a Fuji X-e2 from a local Salt Lake pro photography store to take on this trip. After having lunch in Astoria (and finding out that I could not view the Goonies house due to the owners closing it off from visitors), I drove south down the coast to find a nice beach to hang out on for some sunset pictures. This picture, with a 35 millimeter lens, was my favorite shot from a series of pictures. The sunset was magical and colorful and the tide was very low and allowed for visitors to capture many angles of Haystack Rock.Time
This picture of Haystack Rock on Cannon Beach, Oregon coast, was taken right at sunset the second week of October 17, 2015. It was my fall break while attending Westminster college, Salt Lake City, Utah and studying Photography under David Badly my Sophomore year.Lighting
The sun was just dropping on the horizon and the clouds were bursting with flavorful color.Equipment
Fuji X-e2 rental from Acme camera in Salt Lake city Utah. I cannot remember and my photo info file does not show me what size lens I was using. I believe it was a standard 55 mm, 1.8f lens.Inspiration
The people walking on the beach in the distance. I've found that taking large pictures of landscapes with people in the distance is a trend for me; something I like to do to show perspective or show how dramatically large the landscape is compared how small we are on our planet.Editing
Yes, minor post processing such as slight contrast changes, a little bit of saturation to the colors. I had access to Photoshop on my school computers. I followed step by step procedures taught to us to process pictures using curves. I tried to bring out the shadows in Haystack rock; but I didn't like the grainy results. In my camera bag
My LG G4 phone camera with 16 meg pixels or my only owned digital Nikon D3100. If I'm taking a short trip and I can afford too, I will rent a camera. I've got my eye on a new Fuji X-T1.Feedback
Sunsets, Sunsets, Sunsets.....I love them, especially when there are puffy cumulous clouds in the sky. Start planning your sunset shots at least 1 hour before final setting. Pick a few angles for your compositions and wait for the magic in the colorful sky start doing its thing. That's my best advice. :)
