Location
This photograph was taken at a home studio I set up at my garage, which always filled with old furniture and things I never use. Its ceiling is very tall, and the walls are an old light-blue colour. I love taking pictures there.Time
It must have been around 4 in the afternoon. It was summer. The girls came to my house sort of late, so they had to get dressed very quickly and put their make up on very quickly, because we were losing the light.Lighting
The light in this picture is natural. It's the sunlight coming through the window, and I decided not to reflect it in any way, although I had my equipment right there. I liked the way the light lit the girls from the side, it kind of separated them from one another. I directed them so each girl's shadow didn't darken the one beside them.Equipment
It was shot with my Canon T2i, which is broken now, and its 18-55 f3.5 lens. No other accessories were involved.Inspiration
I've always been kind of obsessed with Victorian paintings of women. I knew it would be in black and white, though. I just wanted to create something deep and pictorial. I just called the girls and said I wanted to try something, so I asked them to bring light coloured clothes, with lace and whatever they could find. They're all actresses, so they had a huge wardrobe full of vintage trasures. As a huge fan of vintage sales myself, I added the necklaces, the flowers, a dress and a blouse. I was obsessed with getting as many textures as I could in the picture. I didn't even know that Natalia, the only girl in the picture who's wearing a dark colour, would look at the camera so fiercefully. It was meant to be.Editing
I changed it to black and white, spiked up the contrast, and added some monochromatic noise for the vintage feel. I always shoot with film, but I had alreay used up all my film by that time, so I was shooting digital. I intended for it to look as if I had shot an Ilford 400.In my camera bag
Never leave without a camera! The one thing I always have with me is my Sakar ff16, a compact film camera. Always have extra film. If I'm travelling with any of my reflex cameras, I need to have my Pentax 50mm f1.7.Feedback
In my opinion, if you've got even a tiny idea of what you're looking to accomplish, you're halfway there. Almost any place is fine to shoot if you've got light. Just call some people over and make them feel comfortable. Serve them tea, or whatever they like, and make them laugh, and feel relaxed. Also, you may have to move things around. Maybe you like the wall that's behind that huge piece of furniture - then have some friends over and ask them to help you move it. Make the best you can with what you've got.
