Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a visit back to my former college,Trinity College at the University of Cambridge. This is a view of the arch that leads to New Court, where I lived in my last two years as an undergrad more than 10 years ago! I had only recently bought my camera after doing a weekend Photography course and this was only my third outing with it, so I wanted to take the opportunity to getting used to it.

Time

This was taken late morning to midday

Lighting

It was a particularly bright and sunny morning which, although not being perfect for capturing portraits, it meant that the arch was partially lit by natural light and highlighted the beautiful carvings on the ceiling of the arch, which I had never noticed before - despite walking under it every day of my student life!

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon EoS 6D with a 85mm lens

Inspiration

As part of a mini- reunion, a few close friends and I decided to return to dine at our former college and take a trip down memory lane. Walking around, we wanted to see how much had changed since we had graduated and given two third of my student life was spent in New Court, I wanted to capture a different view as a nostalgic momento.

Editing

The light was pretty perfect, that I only need to do slight enhancing of the colours to give a chrome effect/filter

In my camera bag

I pretty much have my 85mm portrait lens on my Canon, but also carry my standard 50mm and 20mm landscape lens just incase.

Feedback

I think practice makes perfect is the best advice I was given. I try and take out my camera at every occasion I can so that I can get used to framing shots quickly. I am still a novice, having only taken my camera out 10 times so far, so I'm still trying to get the hang of things. Regardless of the light conditions, you never know when you will have the opportunity for a good shot. As I said, this photo was taken on a bright, sunny day which made it really hard to capture many good shots, but it was by chance I noticed how the natural light lit up the architecture around me. So my tips would be to always take your camera out, despite the weather conditions, and always look up - you never know what you might spot and how the light might end up being a blessing in disguise; allowing you to capture something from a different perspective!
