This image is part of a collection of boudoir/pinup photography that I did in December 2014. The shoot started at 1:00 pm, with mostly the pinup portion first. By the time we reached the hotel, it was getting late and I was definitely tired, but I had ideas that I still wanted to try. Thankfully my model was more than willing to keep shooting, so at 8:30 pm, I told her to get in a comfortable position, with her legs against the wall, and while she was positioning herself, I shot this image.Lighting
Oh, the lighting! What a disaster! I had taken my studio light with me (at the time I only had one light stand). The light stand was on the right of the model and on the left was (oh the horror!) a construction light! Yes, I hang my head in shame on that one, but it was the best I could do at the time. I had an assistant take a pillowcase from one of the extra pillows and hold it in front of the harsh construction light to diffuse some of the harshness.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D7000, using a 15-200 lens.Inspiration
I had done some research online of different boudoir photo shots and this style kept coming back to me as one to try. With a gorgeous model, the perfect backdrop and a fun prop to use in the foreground, it all came to life!Editing
Yes, I did use some Adobe Lightroom edits to make this image perfect in my eyes. I played a lot with the color version first, but once I chanaged it to black and white, I noticed some of the details really popped. The more I warmed the tone, the more beautiful this became. In my camera bag
I always make sure to have my camera body (of course!), two fully charged batteries, two memory cards, and my lenses. I have a large backpack, so I also make sure to have a bottle of water and some snacks (chips, peanuts, etc) within reach for those seconds in between shots where I can take a break :)Feedback
The first piece of advice I have is to definitely meet with your model and talk with him/her first before the shoot. Make sure to discuss expectations, likes/dislikes and comfort first. I've done boudoir shoots before and that's definitely the biggest piece of advice. The shoot won't be any fun, nor will it be productive, if there isn't trust between the model and the photographer. Make sure that the model is comfortable, not just with the subject matter of the shoot, but also with the temperature of the room, positioning of the poses and if they need anything to eat/drink. You need to also be willing to adjust hair, wardrobe or props and, especially with boudoir, this can be a bit of a challenge. Lingerie sometimes has a mind of its own and the model needs to be comfortable with you in case an adjustment needs to be made to the piece of clothing. Be professional but make it a fun atmosphere. I like to keep the mood light by making some jokes or just saying silly things. The more you can get your model to laugh and smile, the more relaxed he/she will be during the shoot!!
