Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, CO. I was a regular visitor to the cemetery before relocating to Oregon, as a photo volunteer for the Find A Grave website.

Time

It was late morning or early afternoon. I had sat down against the trunk of the tree to watch the ducks and geese on the pond, and to just absorb the quiet peacefulness of the cemetery.

Lighting

Dappled sun isn't always easy to catch, but I think sitting in the shade of the trunk of the tree helped.

Equipment

This was shot on my Nikon P600. Nothing else.

Inspiration

Sitting under the tree, with leaves falling, I looked up. I was struck by the contrast of the dark branches to the changing leaves of the tree. I always try to look for different angles when I'm out shooting.

Editing

If I did, it was just a smidge on the contrast/brightness end of things.

In my camera bag

I'm a minimalist, I guess. I usually have 3 spare batteries, a spare SD card, a cleaning cloth for the lens, and occasionally a filter or two. It pretty much all fits into a small 3"x4" case made to store USB drives :)

Feedback

I tend to shoot nature because it moves a heck of a lot less than people do, but it still requires patience, good timing, and a bit of luck. Don't rush a good photo opportunity. I was in this particular location dozens of times, but usually much earlier in the day. It was one of the few times I went mid-afternoon that the opportunity presented itself. If you visit some locales over and over, change up the time of day or the time of year you visit. It may look like an entirely different place!
