Behind The Lens

Location

Marvin the dog is owned by my lifelong best friend. This photo was taken in her home.

Time

We spent an afternoon doing a quick setup and the photoshoot in her living room.

Lighting

I don't do studio portraits so I have yet to invest in decent lighting. I used a very basic (unknown brand) continuous lighting kit as the house wasn't very well lit.

Equipment

I shoot with a Nikon D7100. For this photo I used a 35mm lens, external flash and a white paper backdrop.

Inspiration

Marvin. He is such a sweet dog with a clumsy personality. The eyebrows and goatee make me laugh every time I see him. I just had to photograph him. Luckily, my friend is an excellent dog trainer so he was absolutely perfect. He listened to her commands while I snapped the photos.

Editing

I slightly tweak all of my photos using photoshop. I increased the clarity a little along with brightening the background.

In my camera bag

Nikon D7100 camera body, Nikon 35 or 50 mm, 70-300 mm, my main lens being the sigma 10-20 mm, external flash, two memory cards and a lens cleaning kit. I keep a tripod in my car if ever needed as well.

Feedback

Patience. Working with animals is always tricky. They basically run the show. I was lucky that Marvin was a perfectly behaved model. My advice is to keep calm and take as many shots as possible. You may not get the image you created in your head but you're bound to come out with some great photos so be patient and keep an open mind.
