It's not often I get the image I visualized but this is one of those instances. In my head I pictured this lone mangrove in silhouette with the beautiful colors of dawn behind it. It was totally worth being in the 45 degree weather not to mention standing barefoot in the even colder water. I was trembling most of the time and I think adrenaline and excitement is what kept me going.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Islamorada, a small portion of the Florida Keys.

Time

After waking up at 3AM I drove 2 hours to capture the colors of dawn. It was a very cold morning standing in the water waiting for the sun to rise at 6am.

Lighting

The scene was mostly backlit giving a nice silhouette to the mangrove but there was a small amount of light bleeding in from the side as the sun rose higher.

Equipment

This was shot on the Canon 5Ds r on top of my gitzo tripod. I had my favorite lens the canon 16-35mm f4 attached.

Inspiration

I had been to this location many times but I never got the image I had in my head. It was my pure will to get that image that inspired to keep going back and I am glad I did.

Editing

There is very minimal post processing. The majority was done in Adobe Lightroom applying minor adjustments in exposure. I reduced the highlights to reveal more detail and raised the vibrance for the colors to pop.

In my camera bag

My main camera is my Canon 5Ds r with the canon 16-35 f4 attached. I always have my second favorite lens the canon 24-70 mkii in my bag. They both are incredibly sharp. Along with those I always have my Lee big stopper, Little stopper and the Lee circular polarizer. Since I capture mostly seascapes I have a few micro fiber clothes handy to wipe spray or droplets.

Feedback

My advice to capturing something similar to this is to choose your subject and make it stand out. My subject is the mangrove and it would have been easy to expose for both and blend them but I think keeping the mangrove in silhouette just makes it pop more and makes a stronger image.
