Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a cruise in at Bedford, Pennsylvania. I am a self-taught photographer although I did take some photography courses in college.

Time

This was shot in the late afternoon which was great for bringing out the nice bright colors on the vehicle. I did add some saturation to add to the effect.

Lighting

As far as the lighting again it was in late afternoon and I did not use any kind of fill flash or anything like that. Now for the effect this is one of my 'learning projects' involving the use of layers I duplicated the same image several times, then moved each layer over a little bit and changed the opacity on each layer to create the effect.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon T3 with an Opika 18mm - 300mm macro zoom lens.

Inspiration

I enjoy taking vehicle photos since I enjoy going to car shows and learning how to use layers in post-processing inspired me to come up with this particular result.

Editing

Yes I do post processing on all my images. Most are standard exposure and composition type of post processing but on this particular image I used a lot of artistic post processing involving the use of layers as mentioned above in lighting.

In my camera bag

I try to keep my gear to a minimum since I do a lot of walking about on my shoots. I carry 2 cameras out of the bag, one for video recording and the other for stills. But in the bag I usually carry one or 2 lenses, one of which is a standard 50mm lens with an extension tube on it for extreme macro shots and and a fixed 2.8 1000mm zoom lens. Oh yes I always carry my lightweight tripod with me as well.

Feedback

Since this is a vehicle I'll stick with what I do for mostly my non-artistic standard images but it applies to this as well since the effect was mostly done in post processing. First, try to go to outdoor shows in the late afternoon, you get better colors on the vehicles, better shadows for more depth and you don't have the sun right above to wash out all color. Besides shooting then makes life in the post processing much better especially when you want to get creative.
