Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this photo of my 11yr old Rhodesian Ridgeback "Sargent Pepper" (aka. Sarge) at our home in Melbourne, Victoria in Australia. I have just started to pursue photography as I have discovered that I have a real passion for taking photos. I have only been seriously taking photos since April 2016. This was me just practicing on my gorgeous boy.

Time

I love this photo of my dog Sarge. He's getting older now, so I always try to photograph him where I can so that we can always treasure the memories of him in years down the track. This photo was taken around 1pm in the afternoon, and it was very spur of the moment as I was checking my camera before I left to take my son for a play at the park, when Sarge suddenly looked up at me with those gorgeous brown eyes. I couldn't resist taking a photo of him!

Lighting

There was no specific intentional lighting done here, as we were indoors, but it was very much like he wanted his photo taken as he had positioned himself beautifully in front of one of our big windows and it just gave him that gorgeous glow, and enhanced the coloring on his fur.

Equipment

This was shot with Nikon D5200 which had my favorite lens - a 50mm F.18G. It was taken totally hand held, but from above so I could see his beautiful eyes.

Inspiration

I have always loved taking photos of animals - especially my dog, but my inspiration to take the photo was more about wanting a way to remember him as his is now, vibrant, happy and healthy. These are the memories that I want to cherish of him as he gets older.

Editing

I definitely did some post processing on this image, all done in Lightroom. I adjusted the exposure on the image to brighten in up a little, added a radial filter to the centre of the image to brighten up his face, added some clarity and sharpness with hand edits to his eyes, and also softened his fur by reducing clarity (especially on his face). I also added a slight vignette to finish it off and bumped up the vibrence a small amount

In my camera bag

Unfortunately as I am in the very early stages with my photography journey, I have only basic equipment but hopefully one day I will able to upgrade to a full frame camera (well that's the dream!) Currently I am travelling with a Nikon D5200 crop camera body, a 50mm F1.8 and a 35mm F1.8 lens, and I still have my 2 kit lenses that came with the camera as well which include an 18-55mm and 55-300mm lenses. I tend to only really use my 50mm and 35mm lenses though. I shoot mostly in natural light, so very rarely use a flash. On the odd occasion I will use a Tripod, but I tend to photograph family and childrens portraits/candid moments, so I rarely find the need to used it.

Feedback

I always like to be surprised and work in the moment for my photography, and that would be my best advice. Always pay attention to what is happening around you as any moment can turn into a beautiful captured memory and always have your camera handy. As I have mentioned this photo was totally on the fly, there was no coaxing from me (except for when I said his name to get him to look up) or positioning. It was all in the moment, and totally natural and the post processing was also minimal and just enhanced his features to make him "pop".
