Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo standing looking down on Ohinemutu a Maori village in Rotorua NZ

Time

It was taken about mid-morning on a winter's day

Lighting

I just happened to be driving past on my way down to the Lakefront at Lake Rotorua, and when I saw the scene. I was fascinated by the mysterious look of St Faith's Church arising out of the geothermal mist, and the way the light played through the steam and shined on the water.

Equipment

This photo was taken some time ago possibly with my Canon or mobile phone.

Inspiration

The mysteriousness of the scene inspired me to take this photo. I often drive over the rise and look down on Ohinemute Marae and St Faith's Church. It is a significant geothermal area in Rotorua, NZ and with steam constantly rising up out of the earth the light, the steam constantly changes the scene depending on the time of day and the weather.

Editing

I did no processing. It is how my camera revealed the scene. I do very little processing of any of my photos

In my camera bag

Sometimes I just have my mobile phone, and in the past, I had a Canon. I recently purchased a Nikon D3500 with a DX Nikkor AF-P-DX Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3GED. As a beginner photographer, I have a lot to learn, and I work mainly on instinct. Because of the Covid-19 problem I have been somewhat restricted in getting out to areas to take nature photos that I love to do. I will have to think of creative ways to take photos in places that I have been before.

Feedback

It is interesting and fascinating to keep re-visiting this area. Photographing geothermal areas provide an amazing array of the way the light and steam change the whole scene within minutes. It's like watching a movie right before your eyes, and you have to be prepared to keep taking shots one after the other.
