This photo was taken on holiday in Kasouga, South Africa we were sitting on the side of the river watching the kids play in the water with the dogs. Being German Shorthaired Pointers they absolutely love being in the water.Time
Unfortunately it was the middle of the day in super bright light but I had to take the shot when I saw the dogs playing in the water and couldn't wait for the golden hour. I fired a few off in a sequence at a high shutter speed and was fortunate that this was one of the images that was captured.Lighting
Being the middle of Summer it was in the heat of the day that we visited the river so it happened to be midday, not the best for photos but when a shot comes you sometimes have to take it, no matter the time of day. I always carry my camera with me just in case an opportunity for a great shot arises.Equipment

Watching them playing in the water it looked like I could get a nice action shot from it. I love taking action photos because you can freeze a moment in time. If you compose your image nicely it can lead the viewer to try and figure the image out. If you look at the above shot it almost looks like the dog is jumping back out of the water. When in actual fact he was running from behind, overtook the other dog and subsequently turned in the air, as he jumped out of the water.Editing
Being shot in the middle of the day the light wasn't optimal. I did very basic processing; by adjusting white balance and making global adjustments of contrast white point, black point, shadows and highlights in addition to lens corrections.In my camera bag
I have been playing around with a lot of different cameras and lens combinations so it varies from time to time. One of the staples is my trusty old Canon 7D. I always have a 50mm F1.4 in my bag as well as the 70 - 300mm lens that the above photo was shot with.Feedback
For action photography you always need to be prepared as the action can happen at any moment. You need to have patience to get the right shot and focus heavily on composition during an action sequence. Because of action shots happening at any time of day or night you have to work your exposure really well to make a useable image. You have to know your equipment and be comfortable with it and practice every opportunity that you can.
