The waterfront of Gdansk, the Polish city that gained enormous wealth by joining the hanseatic league which dominated the Baltic maritime trade from 1400 to 1800. The city has a tormented history, having been invaded time and again by the Teutonic Knights, the Danes, the Swedes and even the Mongols during their sweep through Europe in the 13th century. The history of the city goes back as far as 980 AD when a stronghold was erected on the sight by Mieszko I of Poland.
