Wild horses are once again a part of the ecology of western North America, especially the ranges of the southwestern deserts. Horses evolved first in North Ameruca from which they spread to Eurasia and Africa but then became extinct here following the Ice Ages. Horses arrived back in North America with the Soanish conquistadors, errant individuals from which went wild on the prairies and Omanis and were then domesticated by indigenous tribes, forming the foundation of the horse cultures of the American Wrst. Today, descendants of these steeds still roam the more isolated and desolate regions of the West. This curious stallion was looking fur a handout as I travelled the back trails of the Spring Mountains of Nevada, NW of Las Vegas.
