Behind The Lens

Location

We were traveling across Colorado from Denver to Grand Junction and on into Utah. US 70 follows the course of the Colorado River from mile 157 on. At this point you are traveling in Glenwood Canyon. At about mile 120 you come to the Grizzly Creek turnout which features views both eastward and westward down the canyon. I walked a short distance east from the parking lot, and observing the beauty of the fall foliage determined to take the shot. I used my knowledge of hyperlocal distance to ensure that the shot was a sharp as I could make it with my Nikon 18-200mm f3.5-5.6G VR lens while handholding the lens.

Time

It was 5:25 PM of a sunny October day.

Lighting

The deep shadows of the canyon walls were offset by the beautiful color of both the golden leaves of the cottonwoods and the green of the bushes alongside the river banks.

Equipment

As I explained before, i used a Nikon D80 camera combined with a Nikon 18-200mm f3.5-5.6G VR lens. it was handheld because using a tripod would have limited my ability to roam freely looking for the right relationship of all the visible points of the photo I wished to include.

Inspiration

The colors.

Editing

I work with Adobe Photoshop Elements and Camera Raw to enhance the natural colors of the photo to encompass the impact of the scene as I remembered it.

In my camera bag

I normally keep a full frame fisheye lens, an ultra-wide angle lens (non fisheye) and a mid level zoom lens (18-20mm to 200mm). Now that I own a full-frame camera, I'm able to use single length lenses. Using a APS-C camera my wide angle lenses are zooms.

Feedback

Learn how utilize ultra wide angle and full frame fisheye lenses to maximize the framing of a scene and (of course), how to effectively use hyperfocal distance to maintain the utmost sharpness of both the near and the far elements of the scene.
