Behind The Lens

Location

This image is from the rural Ugandan village of Dwambe.

Time

This was taken in the morning. The fog had just started to lift and a light sprinkling of rain was falling. We were on assignment for Holt International Children's Services to document stories of family preservation and strengthening.

Lighting

The sun was just coming over the tree tops, the fog still hug in the air just above the trees making for a cool white balance and diffused lighting situation. No matter where I turned, the lighting remained consistent in the exposure.

Equipment

I was using my Nikon D600 with the kit 24-85 lens. The lens is one that works well in the field for the majority of the situations that I need to capture and I don't worry about bumps and scratches so much when using it. It was hand held with no flash.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture an authentic impression of our experience. Most of the places we visited, the families knew we were coming and would pose without smiling or any hint of expression or clown for the camera. This little girl and her sister were off to the side of the home. the elder sister was caring for the younger and trending to a couple of small squirrelly goats. She would stop and watch me from time to time without saying a word. She was not part of the assignment, so I didn't try to position myself for a shot of her. When there was a lull in the activity around me, I turned and saw the pair of girls again. This time I smiled and lifted my camera for a shot just to engage them. This was the captured moment. She didn't come over to see the image when I offered she just continued with her stare and moved off to tend to her sister and goats.

Editing

I cropped the image and tightened up the levels a bit.

In my camera bag

On this trip, I carried just 2 lenses. The Nikkor 24-85 VR 3.5-4.5 G IF-ED and my nifty-fifty 1.8. I used a monopod for filming of video and as a walking stick from time to time.

Feedback

I say this to those that I travel with and others that are wanting to capture moments of time. Be present, know your camera. So often I see people fiddling with the camera or checking the shot on the screen. I set my camera when I arrive at a location. Usually Aperture preferred or entirely manual. With the ability to quickly spin wheels to adjust aperture or shutter speed, I can watch my surroundings. Hear the sounds, smell the air and take in the experience and select the moments I want to save.
