Location
This photo was taken in Jamestown, North Dakota. I lived there for 8 years. I am a self taught photographer and learned mostly through eBooks.Time
This is probably one of my favorite images. I remember waking up around 6 AM and walking a good distance in the cold. I used a tripod for this photo. It was one of the best mornings I can remember, walking around in the cold. This was taken on December 25, 2015 at 6:25 AM.”Lighting
I wanted this image to look mysterious by making a silhouette out of it. I followed the rule of thirds to draw the viewer into a scene. I was initially waiting for the sun to rise but the sky turned bright orange before the sun was up.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 20D, with an 18-55mm f/2.8 lens. I used a tripod for this photo.Inspiration
I was looking for a place to shoot the orange sky when I stumbled upon this beautiful scene. I typically look for silhouettes that would stand out against a bright colored sky. I used to drive around the country side for scenes like this. I originally wanted to take pictures of silhouettes of farm animals like horses and cows.Editing
Usually landscape photography requires a lot of processing. In this particular case, I used Aperture 3 software from Apple. Since I used a tripod and set the ISO to 100, I did not do a lot of noise removal on this photo. In my camera bag
The first thing I always pack is my Canon 70-200mm 2.8 zoom lens. For landscape photos, I use my 17-55mm f 2.8 lens. I also carry a slik tripod as I like to shoot in low light conditions. I always try to wait for the blue hour before sunrise. I used to pack my Canon 20d back then but now, I have upgraded to Canon 70 d.Feedback
The prairie lands of North Dakota have unique characteristics especially during the winter months. The sky can turn from bright red to bright orange within a matter of minutes. One of the major features of a landscape photographer is to have patience and wait for the right time, which is essential in a place like this. Dawn and dusk are key moments. Diversify, have patience and plan ahead.”
