Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Sunset Ridge, Huron Metro Parks in Michigan, The tree itself stands about 50ft above the lake, There are stairs and ramps that lead down to the water. This shot was taken about 30 mins before sunset. No filters were used, I did however crop the photo.

Time

When taking sunrise or sunset photos, I find the best shots with the most color are taken about 30 mins before sunrise, sunset with some cloud play. I'm fortunate that I happen to be surrounded by lakes, I can usually photograph the sun rising in two locations, 7 mins apart.

Lighting

As a self taught photographer, I can only tell you that I find my best photos are shot when there's cloud cover. Semi shade, in this particular photo, you can see the clouds. The sun is not up so high that the brightness drowness out the rest of the photo or the color.

Equipment

My interest in photography began at 10 years old, remember those old polaroids and throw away cameras, well that was the best a ten year old could get and that's what I started with. By the time I got through high school, digital cameras didn't exist, so my first real camera was a minolta. And today I have several cameras that are with me all the time. 2 Nikon's, 3 Sony and a canon. I use different cameras for different purposes. For example, well all my cameras take great sunrise, sunset photos, i find my Sony rx100, takes excellent sunrise sunset, photos. Because it's small and light weight, I can photograph the sunrise, sunset without a tripod and from anywhere. I crop often, photograph mostly outdoors, uses filters rarely. My biggest tool, is my car, I don't recommend it, but I love to photograph what I see, when I see it, and if I have to stop my car, pull over to get the shot, i do.

Inspiration

The one thing most people take for granted is the beauty of the world we live in. From a sunrise, to a white deer, a tulip, a child. A sleek car, old fashioned train, a 2020 rocket. Beauty surrounds us, you just gotta stop and get the shot, because no one knows what tomorrow brings.

In my camera bag

I carry three different cameras, extra batteries, memory card, cleaning supplies, tripod, the basics.

Feedback

If your interested in sunsets and sunrises, find a good spot, show up thirty mins prior and set up. I rarely use a tripod, my little Sony rx100 takes excellent photos so I use that, which allows me to move around freely or to get the shot while driving, not recommend. To get excellent shots of sunrises, sunsets with wildlife, ducks, cranes, herons, etc., use my Nikon or canon, with 300 lens. Photographing wildlife or people outdoors, I generally make sure the subject is well lighted, not brightly lighted, and I find a little shade to balance the light that hits my lens. I'm not one for walking around with a ton of equipment, generally 2 cameras, extra battery, memory card. So I use what's around me to help me improve my photos. The last thing I'd add, is if you don't already have one, get a good size, 12, 15 inch digital picture frame. Looking at a photo via photo paper, is flat and dull, dont get me wrong their still stunning and beautiful, but put that photo on a digital photo frame and it comes to life. Every sunrise, sunset that flips, I'm seeing it as I saw it. Plus, now I can see all my photos without sitting at a computer, or thumbing through photo albums. I wake up and my photos start showing. Love it
