Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at home. Due to the fact that I have three kids and a full time job that isn't photography the kids and our activities tend to make up most of my subject matter. I still dream of visiting exotic cities shooting street scenes but I will have to wait for now!

Time

This was taken in the afternoon. It is my youngest daughter Isobel asleep in her cot at only a few months old. Unfortunately children won't wait for the golden hour to be at their most photogenic. No matter how much I try to convince them.

Lighting

It was shot using natural light. I really shouldn't write this incase my other half reads it and gives me a row but I opened her blinds slightly to give me the nice light across her face. Izzy's bedroom faces west and because it was winter we get nice diffused light quite early in the afternoon here in Scotland so it worked out well.

Equipment

I shot using a Nikon D7100 with a 35mm F1.8 Nikkor lens. Its what I use 90% of the time. I didn't use a flash as I didn't want to wake her but I think the natural light is so much nicer for this shot.

Inspiration

Look at that wee face! Who wouldn't be inspired to shoot that! I went in to check that she was sleeping and she had put her soft toy bear over the top of her head when falling asleep. Thats the furry thing you can see in the shot. I thought she looked cute so I got my camera.

Editing

I shoot in RAW and used lightroom for my post processing. I cut back the temperature a little, took a little off the exposure in general and then boosted the whites and highlights. Added a little contrast, cut back the clarity and vibrance, took a little off of the saturation and luminance using the HSL panel, boosted the blue curve in the highlight region, added a little vignette then mucked about with the colour calibrations. I really got to what I do in post through mucking about and getting a look I like. I really wish I was more technical and knew what I was doing and why but I just go with what I think looks good!

In my camera bag

I am quite good at travelling light so 90% of the time I carry my D7100 with the 35mm F1.8 attached. I will always have my Nikon SB-700 flash unit and that is really it. Depending where I am going and what I am doing I may take either a 50mm F1.4 or an 18-120mm zoom. I'm not a massive fan of zooms though as I find they make me lazy and I just zoom in and don't really compose well so I only really use it to go really wide if I am shooting for a certain look.

Feedback

Be quiet! Shooting portraits of your own kids is a lot easier than other people as you know them so well and you know when you will get the best shots. I was lucky with this shot as she had wrapped her toy around her head but to be honest most of the shots of my kids are of them doing weird things as they are mad. I always say to think about the corners and keep an eye on silly things that have crept into your composition. Thats why I enjoy shooting with primes. You have to physically move yourself into the position for the shot you want. Because I wanted to get so close I had to kind of hang myself into her cot and get my arm down to steady myself so you have to make sure that you get it right first time as there is nothing like the continued firing of a shutter to wake a sleeping child and annoy a tired mother!
