Location
I set up to take this picture on my dining room table. It gave me enough area play with different angles, background distances, and drop height.Time
I take my drop shots in the late evening as there is a lot of natural light that gets into my dining room.Lighting
I've found it is key to have the area as dark as possible. It doesn't need to be pitch black; I have a light on in an adjacent room so I can see just enough for each reset.Equipment
D5500 Nikon with a Tamron AF 90mm f/2.8 Di SP AF/MF 1:1 Macro Lens. Three external flashes with gels connected via wireless trigger. I don't use any computerized dropping systems; everything I do is by hand with a medicine dropper and luck!Inspiration
The challenge of water drop photography inspired me. I've seen a lot of amazing shots and I like to try different things; see what shots I can get.Editing
I processed the photo in Lightroom. All adjustments were just basic tweaks, ie spot removal, cropping, and contrast. In my camera bag
I usually have my D5500, various lenses from macro to super telephoto, extra batteries, and memory cards.Feedback
Be prepared to take a LOT of pictures trying to get a good drop shot. Especially when using no computerized equipment, it's not out of the norm to only have one good shot out of hundreds. Even slight changes in flash angle and intensity, along with backdrop and gel variations, can have a huge effect on what shots you get. It's best to play around with all kinds of variables and see what works.
