Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a trip to Kauai in 2013. This is Opaeikaa Falls, the waterfall made famous by the television series Fantasy Island.

Time

I believe I photographed the waterfall mid-morning in February.

Lighting

It was quite bright out, a pretty sunny day on this part of the island. I remember wishing that we had been at this site either earlier in the day or later in the evening. In Kauai, there are several micro environments and the weather changes quickly.

Equipment

As a beginning photographer I used the compact camera Canon Powershot SX 260 HS. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

Mother nature offers some opportunities that simply are hard to mess up! I did take numerous pics from several points along the road in order to find the most dramatic view of the waterfall. I also wanted to include some of the trees that were near me to add interest and depth perception.

Editing

No other editing was done to the photo other than a bit of cropping to improve the composition.

In my camera bag

Being a novice photographer, a compact camera is fail safe. I love to travel and take spontaneous pictures of children and animals so it fits nicely in my purse. The battery rarely needs charging and every once and awhile I bring along another memory card. I just recently upgraded to a Mirrorless System Camera to advance my skills and explore manual mode along with multiple accessories.

Feedback

Never be satisfied with one or two photos of an object, take many. Move around, try different angles, vary the height from which you shoot, and shift your focus to make a difference in your result. I like to review my photos and assess the composition created.
