Behind The Lens

Location

This shot is a composite of three separate images. The storm was taken in Southeast Montana just outside of the small town of Plevna. The two elk were shot in North Carolina in The Great Smokey Mountains National Park.

Time

The storm was taken around midnight. I was shooting the front edge of an approaching storm, so I could get the lightning before the rain started.

Lighting

Shooting lightning is a lot like light painting. You will keep the shutter opened until you feel that you have had enough light to expose the image.

Equipment

I shot this with a Canon 7D and my 24-105mm lens. I used a generic tripod and a Youngnoo cable release. The settings I use for storm photography is ISO 100 f3.5 and BULB mode for my shutter speed.

Inspiration

I have always loved the power and beauty of storms, and love the idea of creating a truly once in a lifetime image.

Editing

I use Lightroom and Photoshop as my editing software.

In my camera bag

I have my 7D and my original Rebel as a backup. I also have my 24-105, 75-300 and 200-400 lenses. I also use a Canon 430 Speedlight flash.

Feedback

Scout your areas before a storm starts, so you can have good locations no matter which way the storm tracks. Shoot with a tripod, and manual focus set to infinity to make sure the lightning is in focus. The most important tip is to shoot a lot and then shoot more frames, stay safe, have fun and don't give up.
