A common garden spider resting in the morning sun. This was taken in my garden, there were several spiders to choose from but this one was lighter in colour which showed the sun illuminating its body to better effect. This was taken with a Sigma macro 105mm lens.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this in my garden. I had a new macro lens & wanted to try it out. I was doing a photography course at the time & saw the opportunity.

Time

It was mid morning as the sun was rising.

Lighting

There were several spiders but this one was in the right position with the sun behind lighting up the Web with rainbow colours. But not too strong a light to over expose.

Equipment

Canon 600d with a sigma 105mm macro lens on a tripod.

Inspiration

I am not a fan of spiders but was looking for a creature that would stay still long enough to get a close up shot. The pattern on the body fascinated me and I realised that ugly could be beautiful.

Editing

I did very little to this shot I took well over an hour & quite a few shots to take the perfect one. Just upped the clarity & colour a little & slightly changed the angle.

In my camera bag

Everything is kept together. Tripod, 5 lenses, backup batteries & cleaning stuff.

Feedback

To really get into macro & super macro you need a decent true macro lens. Plenty of patience a tripod with a 2 second time delay to avoid any camera shake. You get a very narrow depth of field and subjects go out of focus very easily.
