Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Upstate, New York, in a field close to where I live. There are many beautiful horses there to photograph.

Time

This photo always looked particularly different than others I have shot, because it was taken around 6 P.M. in the evening. The sun was setting, making the lighting appear warm and soft.

Lighting

I really wanted this image to look cold but warm at the same time, so the time of day was perfect for it. The sun was just above the trees making the horse shine and gleam with color.

Equipment

This was shot on a Sony A3000 with a 18-55mm lens, and ISO of 100, and an aperture of f/4.5. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

I was looking for a day where the skies were blue with little cloud cover, so the sun would shine brighter on my subject. My biggest inspiration would be God because He has created everything on this earth and the earth itself. I had also recently been looking at some fantastic photographers from social media, who shot their pictures in the evening when the lighting wasn't so harsh, as opposed to if I had taken it earlier that day. The colors would have been washed out greatly in mid-day so I always wait until the evening for my shots.

Editing

Post processing is big for me because it can make the photo look immensely different than if you were to leave it original. I used Adobe Lightroom and then I transferred it to VSCO Camera on my smartphone for this because I wanted it to look its best and to also have a little bit of a retro feeling to it.

In my camera bag

The first thing I pack would be my Sony 18-55mm lens which has a small zoom range but it still packs a punch when you want to zoom. Lastly, I pack my Sony A3000 body which is extremely rugged but comfortable at the same time.

Feedback

Upstate, New York is beautiful in all of the seasons, but I would have to say that spring and summer are the best times of year for shooting. The countryside offers a huge amount of wildlife and rolling hills, so it is always stunning throughout each year. Wait until the evening to shoot because the lighting is magical and can help your photo look great. Don't be afraid to stand out, be who God made you to be, and never let anyone tell you different.
